Arizona Hiking Shack at the Phoenix Summit Challenge
The 2021 Phoenix Summit Challenge was a blast this year! The Challengers were awesome, and the Phoenix Parks & Recreation Rangers put on an incredible U-Rock Festival for them as they finished the last summit at South Mountain Park.
On the trails the Park Rangers, along with the Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association and other volunteers, kept the hikers safe on the 26-mile up and down hill "marathon" around the valley’s top summits.
At the festival, they were greeted and congratulated with Live Music, food and drink and The Arizona Hiking Shack's mobile shack display. This year we brought some fun vendors who joined us with demos: MSR, Scarpa, Adidas, Darn Tough, Oboz and more. All had a great time with the over 1000 challengers, their friends and families. The Shack had free gear prizes with our popular Climb for a Prize game (hook a carabiner on a piton). We offered Outdoor Research hats, Katadyn BeFree Water Filter Kits & Purification tablets, Darn Tough & Features Socks, Petzl Headlamps, Deuter Bags, Thermarest Pillows and of course our own Survival Bandana's! We later hosted a raffle for headlamps from Princeton Tech and footwear from Scarpa, Adidas, Danner and Form Premium Insoles. There were also 3-day and 5-day rental packages from our rental department, as well as wilderness survival and backpacking classes. In all, we gave out over $4000 of prizes to the participants.
We were honored to be a part of this amazing event that got people outside in a fun challenge that is so historically part of the “Valley of the Sun.”
