How to survive emergencies in a wilderness setting with minimal resources is essential knowledge every outdoor enthusiast should have. This course covers established survival principles and protocols for avoiding and managing emergencies in any remote environment with an emphasis on Southwest Desert hazards.

Through Instructionals, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, Q&A, and detailed presentations you will get the practical knowledge that can keep you alive!

Course covers protocols for:

  • The Principles of Survival & Attitude
  • The needs; Water, Shelter, Fire, Food, Sleep
  • Basic Navigation
  • Basic First Aid
  • Extreme Weather & Environments
  • Animal Encounters
  • Helping Rescuers to help you

Ideal for hikers, backpackers, hunters, off roaders and other outdoor enthusiasts, this course is also great for families, travel and anyone wanting to be prepared.

CLASS SIZE is kept small (9 attendees) to facilitate questions, individual attention and safe practices during the pandemic. Masks are required in-store.

CLASS INCLUDES: 10% discount for all AHS purchases when you create a Shack account as part of the Arizona Hiking Shack family.

WAIVERS will need to be signed in store for this class,





  • CONFIRMATION EMAIL within 48 hrs of booking class will contain information you will need. Some classes require a list of items you will want to have ready at class time to participate in exercises. We’ve kept these simple. You probably have everything needed in your house. If not, these are easily attainable at a market or drug.


  • All AHS Classes have a 4-PERSON MINIMUM. If minimum is not met class can be cancelled.


  • CLASS CUT-OFF for sign up is 3 Days (72 hours) prior to class.


  • IF WE CANCEL class for low attendance, payment is refunded or applied to another class or event, your choice. Cancelations take place 72 hours prior to class if needed via email.


  • IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL PRIOR to 72 hours before class you will receive a full refund. Any cancellations by attendees LESS than 72 hours prior to class cannot be refunded but can be applied to another class.



Jonathan Mincks – Wilderness Skills & Safety Instructor

His life-long study and engagement in wilderness skills and emergency response has earned him multiple credentials in; Advanced Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Natural Medicine, Wilderness Survival, Desert Survival, and Outfitting.

His inspiring approach to teaching is renowned for being practical, thorough, and current.  His attention to detail has garnered him acclaim from new enthusiasts to seasoned professionals alike.
