WATER IN THE WILD - TECHNIQUES, GEAR, COLLECTING, TREATING, CARRYING AND USING WATER IN THE BACKCOUNTRY

This workshop covers the techniques and gear essential for safe and efficient use of water in the backcountry.

From camping to backpacking to remote emergencies, water is the one thing you can not do without. If you are out for any extended period of time you will need to collect and treat water. With so many choices of filters, purifiers and tablets to choose from it can be daunting to figure out the best for you. Get some hands-on knowledge and practical information to handle water needs with confidence in the backcountry. 

You will learn the practical use of: 

  • General safe practices
  • How various filters, purifiers and tablets work
  • The most common mistakes people make when it comes to water
  • Carrying options
  • Why carry an extra bottle
  • Emergency options for collecting and treating water
  • Tips & Tricks and more

 

WHERE: The Arizona Hiking Shack 3244 E. Thomas Rd. Phx

WHO: Beginners to Intermediate. Ages 18 & up. (12 yrs & up with Gaurdian) Limit 9 participants. Hikers, campers, backpackers, anglers, off-roaders, paddlers, climbers, preppers, and all interested.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS OUTSIDE. COME PREPARED TO WORK IN THE DIRT & SUN. A bottle of water and appropriate clothing is highly reccomended.

WORKSHOP SIZE: is kept small (9 attendees) to facilitate questions, individual attention and distancing. Masks are appreciated if you are not vacinated during this Pandemic.

FAQ

  • ALL AHS CLASSES & WORKSHOPS HAVE A 4-PERSON MINIMUM. If minimum is not met class can be cancelled.
  • WORKSHOP CUT-OFF for registration sign up is 3 Days (72 hours) prior to class. Walk-ins on day of are welcome if space allows.
  • IF WE CANCEL class for minimum attendance requirement not being met, payment is refunded or applied to another class or event, your choice. Cancelations take place 48 hours prior to class if needed via email. (We’ve only canceled twice in the last 8 years.)
  • IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL PRIOR to 72 hours before class you will receive a full refund. Any cancellations by attendees LESS than 72 hours prior to class cannot be refunded but can be applied to another class. (Instructors are available via email and always strive for your satisfaction.)
  • A waiver will need to be signed and returned via email for class.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Jonathan Mincks – Wilderness Skills & Safety Instructor

Mincks is a boondocks scholar who has been exploring the backcountry since in diapers. His life-long study and engagement in wilderness skills and emergency response has earned him multiple credentials in; Advanced Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Natural Medicine, Wilderness Survival, Desert Survival, Paddling Specialist and Outfitting.

His approach to teaching is renowned for being practical, thorough, inspiring and current.  His attention to detail and current "hacks" has garnered him acclaim from new enthusiasts and seasoned professionals alike.
