This course covers advanced first aid skills for emergencies when help from professional first responders is not available. For those not able to do a 16 hour course, this "crash course" for wilderness first aid will prepare you with the knowledge and skills to aid in remote care and "best practices" for many first aid situations. 

You will learn how to treat the most common injuries & illnesses associated with backcountry adventure and manage the more severe medical issues that can occur, whether in the wilderness, an auto accident or disaster.

Ideal for hikers, backpackers, preppers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, this course is also great for travel, families, and anyone wanting to be prepared.

  • Dehydration & Heat Exhaustion
  • Blisters, Burns, Cuts & Scraps
  • Sprains & Strains

  • First Aid Kit Components

This class is designed for those who do not need or desire a 2 day course with WFA (Wilderness First Aid) certification. There is no certificate accompanying this class.


CLASS SIZE is kept small (10 attendees max) to facilitate questions, individual attention and safe practices during the pandemic if in-store. Masks are required in-store.

CLASS INCLUDES: 10% discount for all AHS purchases when you create a Shack account as part of the Arizona Hiking Shack family.

WAIVERS will need to be signed for any in-store class.

Jonathan Mincks – Wilderness Skills & Safety Instructor

Mincks is a boondocks scholar who has been exploring the backcountry since in diapers. His life-long study and engagement in wilderness skills and emergency response has earned him multiple credentials in; Advanced Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Natural Medicine, Wilderness Survival, Desert Survival, and Outfitting.

Members of the Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association Search and Rescue team have called his classes “PSAR – Preventative Search and Rescue."
